End-of-Life Care: Aftercare for Your Beloved Pets
One of the most difficult responsibilities we take on as pet owners is the responsibility of knowing when it is time to make the decision to let our pet go. No one wants to make this decision but sometimes it is necessary.
Deciding When to Say Goodbye
Age, prolonged or worsening illness, or injury are all potential reasons that an owner may decide that euthanasia is the right and compassionate choice. We understand that even though it may be the right decision, it is still never an easy decision. Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is always difficult.
It is important to have a good relationship with your veterinarian and the staff when making this decision. Your veterinarian will explain your pet's condition and any possible treatments and their potential outcome. He or she will also give you information on the level of pain your pet may be experiencing and if there are steps to be taken that could minimize that pain.
In the end, the decision to euthanize a pet should be made based on the quality of life your pet can expect given his or her condition.
Euthanasia
If the decision is made to euthanize your pet we will make sure that steps are taken to make the process pain- and fear-free. Travelers Rest Animal Hospital has dedicated feline and canine comfort rooms that provide a living room setting with low light and a peaceful atmosphere. You can choose to remain with your pet or not if you feel your emotional state may cause your pet more stress. We always sedate a pet before the medication that actually stops the heart is administered in order to make the process painless.
We understand that this is a difficult time and we will treat you, your family, and your pet with dignity and compassion throughout the process. Remains are handled in accordance with the owner’s wishes. We offer clay paw prints as a lasting reminder of your pet's life.
The veterinary team at Travelers Rest Animal Hospital is here to help you through this difficult time. Please call us if you have any questions or need help making a decision for you and your pet.
